dansby vogler music - "Simply the best singer I have ever known."

For Levon...
Last Saturday night, our band Wailin' Wall played a concert at Homer's Coffee House here in Overland Park, KS. Earlier in the  week, cancer took Levon Helm, drummer and vocalist for The Band, at the young-but-experienced age of 71. Levon was the greatest drummer and the most unique vocalist of his era. Born on the Arkansas side of Memphis, he grew up so poor that, according to his account in This Wheel's On Fire, his memoir about the The Band, there was no racial discrimination in his community. Everyone worked to make
their hardscrabble existence, and all were accorded the same status and respect.

That sense of honor, community and hard work carried Levon Helm through the rest of his roller-coaster life in music, movie stardom, through bankruptcy and back to live music in its purest form through the Midnight Rambles on his upstate New York farm. He was amazing as a songwriter, an actor, and a Grammy-winning musician.

Wailin' Wall was determined in our own small way not to let that legacy pass without mention.

We devoted the last 20 minutes of our show to Levon and The Band, singing the classics "It Makes No Difference,"  "The Weight," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Ophelia." A wonderful thing happened as we sang: our crowd began to sing along, getting louder and more passionate with each song. At the end, we realized that we had done it right...the real show hadn't been on the stage...Here's hoping Levon is riding through Heaven with Ezekiel on that wheel of fire, pounding out a rhythm that makes the angels nod...
